Standing at a phenomenal 2,717 ft, the Burj Khalifa dwarfs all its neighbouring buildings and is almost 200 metres higher than the next tallest (Shanghai Tower, China).

All of the following proposed buildings would make the Burj Khalifa look like your average inner-city tower, an interesting thought if you’ve ever stood at the bottom of the Burj Khalifa and looked up!

Even if the following buildings don’t ever get built, the proposals offer us a glimpse into the future. If a 4000 metre high building that can house up to 1 million people is something that gets you excited then please read on:

Name: X-Seed 4000

Height: 4000 metres

Year of First Proposal : 1995

Date of Completion: Undetermined

Country of Origin: Tokyo, Japan

The X-Seed 4000 was conceived with the idea in mind that it can accommodate between 500,000 and 1 million people. It is the tallest building to ever be fully envisioned. The building was proposed to have a 3.7 mile wide base and 800 floors. It is reported that the firm behind the buildings construction never intended on building it, but simply created the plans in order to gain some recognition for their business. Either way, the firm attracted huge amounts of attention to themselves and we think the $1 trillion+ price tag might have put off investors.

Name: Ultima Tower

Height: 3,217 metres

Year of first Proposal: 1991

Date of Completion: Undetermined

Country of Origin: San Francisco, USA

The two-mile high Ultima Tower was the vision of architect Eugene Tsui and is the second tallest building ever proposed. Like the X-Seed 4000, this building could potentially house up to 1,000,000 inhabitants. The tower would also utilise atmospheric pressure between the bottom and top of the tower create electricity throughout the tower.

Name: Dubai City Tower

Height: 2,400 metres

Year of first Proposal: 2008

Date of Completion: 2025

Country of Origin: Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The third tallest building ever envisioned is the Dubai City Tower. If the building is to be built, it would be 3 times the height of the current tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa, and 7 times the height of the Empire state Building. The proposal includes 400 floors and a 125 mph vertical bullet train posing as the main elevator. The building has an internal core with 6 outer buildings connecting with it every 100 floors.

Name: Shimizu Mega-City Pyramid

Height: 2,004 metres

Year of First Proposal: 1996

Date of Completion: Undetermined

Country of Origin: Tokyo, Japan

This proposed pyramid structure in Tokyo, Japan would be more than 14 times as high as the Great Pyramid of Giza. Like the Ultima Tower and the X-Seed 4000, this could also house up to 1,000,000 people. There is a problem with the construction, however, current materials could simply not create a structure like this because of their weight. This design is waiting on the development of super-strong lightweight materials based on carbon nanotubes.
