{"id":10035,"date":"2016-01-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-08T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.processindustryforum.com\/uncategorised\/inspirational-award-winning-young-female-engineers"},"modified":"2016-01-08T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-01-08T00:00:00","slug":"inspirational-award-winning-young-female-engineers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.processindustryforum.com\/career-progression\/inspirational-award-winning-young-female-engineers","title":{"rendered":"Inspirational award-winning young female engineers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some of the UK\u2019s most inspirational <a href=\"https:\/\/www.processindustryforum.com\/careerprogression\/iet-young-woman-engineer-of-the-year-nominees-announced\" target=\"_blank\">young female engineers<\/a> have been recognised for their achievements by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the <strong>National Apprenticeship Service<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.processindustryforum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Female-engineering-apprentices.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6075\" src=\"https:\/\/www.processindustryforum.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Female-engineering-apprentices-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Female engineering apprentices\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As new statistics from the Institution of Engineering and Technology\u2019s (IET) Skills and Demand in Industry survey showed that women represent only 9% of the engineering workforce, the need for recognising and celebrating outstanding female engineers has never been so important. The good news is that there are plenty of inspirational role models to celebrate.<\/p>\n<h2>Young Woman Engineer of the Year<\/h2>\n<p>The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) presented its prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.processindustryforum.com\/engineering\/princess-royal-presents-wise-awards-to-inspiring-women-in-science-technology-and-engineering\" target=\"_blank\">Young Woman Engineer of the Year awards<\/a> recently. The three inspirational award winners will play an ambassadorial role for the engineering and technology professions in the forthcoming months, promoting engineering careers to girls and young people.<\/p>\n<p>Orla Murphy, an acoustic and audio engineer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.processindustryforum.com\/process-industry-jobs\/jaguar-land-rover-inject-450m-into-engine-centre\" target=\"_blank\">Jaguar Land Rover<\/a>, won the <strong>IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year<\/strong>. Orla said: \u201cThis opens so many doors \u2013 I\u2019m meeting different people and broadening my network. I hope to be given more opportunities to talk to schools and perhaps to bigger audiences. Right now I\u2019m working as a STEM ambassador and am involved with TED, but I want to do more and I plan to make the most of this opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Siemens controls engineer, <strong>Emma Goulding<\/strong>, won the IET Mary George Prize for Apprentices.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I think it\u2019s disappointing that the amount of women in engineering is so low at the minute and that needs to change. We\u2019re missing a lot of great talent simply because girls think it\u2019s an industry just for men,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Women\u2019s Engineering Society Award was presented to Helen Cavill, process improvement manager at M&amp;H Plastics. \u201cI enjoy solving real-world problems and often describe myself as an \u2018engineering detective\u2019,\u201d she commented.<\/p>\n<p>The IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards celebrate today\u2019s <strong>most successful female engineers<\/strong>, encouraging them to become role models to inspire more girls to become engineers and help address the gender imbalance in engineering and science.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naomi Climer<\/strong>, IET president, said: \u201cI\u2019d like to congratulate the three winners who have been recognised and rewarded for their talent. They are a real credit to the engineering profession.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>National Apprenticeship Awards 2015<\/h3>\n<p>Elsewhere, BAE Systems apprentice Joanne Sharples, from St Annes, has been shortlisted as a national finalist in the Higher Apprentice of the Year category of the National Apprenticeship Service\u2019s National Apprenticeship Awards 2015. BAE Systems is also a finalist in the <strong>Macro Employer of the Year<\/strong> category.<\/p>\n<p>Joanne works in a project management role for the the defence and aerospace engineering giant\u2019s Military Air and Information business based at RAF Coningsby. She is currently in her fourth year of her apprenticeship working towards a Bachelor\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n<p>Joanne\u2019s training has so far involved work on complex engineering projects such as the F-35 Lightning II and the Eurofighter Typhoon. Nigel Whitehead, group managing director, Programmes and Support said: \u201cBAE Systems is a company with great ambitions and we have a long and proud history of delivering top-tier vocational training. I am delighted to see our apprenticeship programme receive further recognition for its high-quality training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am thrilled too that Joanne Sharples has been shortlisted for the Higher Apprentice award.
