NEC Class 2 approval for Murrelektronik’s MICO range

Efficient NEC Class 2 circuits are now a reality after eight of Murrelektronik’s MICO power distribution modules have been given NEC Class 2 approval. What does this mean for you? Cost-effective, compact and simpler NEC Class 2 circuits, as PIF reports.

NEC Class 2 circuits

Murrelektronik’s MICO is a proven solution for intelligent power distribution and efficient protection of load circuits in UL508A cabinets. Eight MICO redundancy modules are now available with NEC Class 2 approval making it possible to design efficient NEC Class 2 circuits.

What are class 2 circuits?

A Class 2 circuit is the portion of the wiring system between the load side of a Class 2 power source and the connected equipment. Class 2 circuits have limited energy and a maximum power of 100VA. According to the UL definition, there is neither the risk of electrical fires nor electric shock due to the limited energy in these circuits. Therefore, according to UL508A, the cabinet components used in a Class 2 circuit don’t require UL approval.

Up to now, an individual NEC Class 2 approved power supply was used for every circuit of this kind. This resulted in high costs, required a lot of cabinet space and considerable wiring effort. With Murrelektronik’s NEC Class 2 approved MICOs, you can design NEC Class 2 circuits even faster, in a more compact and cost effective way.

All you need is a standard power supply (that doesn’t necessarily have to be NEC Class 2 approved) combined with a MICO to easily create two, four or eight separate load circuits with limited energy. By connecting several MICO power supply redundancy modules with their integrated bridging system, the number of channels can be increased up to a total current of 40A. Now the following cabinet components in these NEC Class 2 circuits don’t require UL approval. This prevents a lot of paperwork.

Features of MICO supply units

MICO offers additional benefits for circuit design with its proven functions including: channel-specific switch off in the event of overload, a visual warning notice, saving of error messages and cascading start of current paths – making it possible to use a smaller power supply.

MICO Basic is Murrelektronik's intelligent power distribution module for 24 V DC applications. It monitors the power distribution and reacts to short circuits by shutting the channel down as late as possible but as early as necessary. MICO Basic is perfect for any application that protection a lot of sensors and actuators with similar demands. The current ranges are preset and the modules monitor four or eight channels with 2, 4 or 6 A.

MICO Classic is the intelligent power distribution module from Murrelektronik for 24 V DC applications. This cabinet component monitors currents on up to four channels. It indicates when approaching the maximum load and it shuts the channel off if there's a short circuits or overload.

MICO Fuse is the ideal alternative to using individual safety terminals. The compact module features eight sockets for glass tube fuses that can easily be serviced from the front of the module. It protects up to eight channels. The MICO FUSE 24 LED version has additional LEDs that indicate the operating condition of each channel in red and green. A group alarm contact sends the current status to the control. The universal module MICO Fuse 250 covers the complete range from 0 to 250 V AC/DC.

MICO+ is the intelligent power distribution module from Murrelektronik for 24 V DC applications. This cabinet component monitors currents on up to four channels. It indicates when approaching the maximum load and it shuts the channel off if there's a short circuits or overload.
