FLEXIM launches ultrasonic flow meter for water industry

Experts in the field of non-invasive ultrasonic flow measurement with ultrasound, FLEXIM, have developed a new ultrasonic measuring system, called the FLUXUS WD, specifically for the water industry to carry out simultaneous non-invasive measurements of volume flow, flow velocity and temperature with one device. PIF explores the features and benefits of these new clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters.

With the constant expansion of sewage treatment plants and more stringent requirements for advanced wastewater treatment, operators are constantly in search of reliable ways to retrofit their piping systems. Non-invasive flow measurement with FLUXUS ultrasonic flow meters has proven to be an efficient and cost-effective alternative to other technologies used for wastewater flow applications.

FLEXIM ultrasonic flow meters

Due to their outstanding low flow accuracy (down to 0.01 m/s) and minimal installation costs, FLEXIM clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters have become a standard solution for monitoring drinking water networks. The drift-free and maintenance-free flow meters offer excellent measurement repeatability and are therefore ideal for monitoring district metered areas (DMAs) and detecting leaks.

FLEXIM is now the first to offer an innovative application of the ultrasonic technology; namely, highly precise temperature measurement. The same ultrasonic transducers that are clamped onto the outside of the pipe to measure the transit time difference of ultrasonic signals with and against the flow direction simultaneously measure the sonic velocity in the medium. Sound speed is a characteristic property of a substance and depends on temperature. For water suppliers measuring a relevant temperature range from 0 °C to 30 °C, the acoustical measurement achieves an accuracy of ± 0.2 K.

Higher water temperatures represent a hygiene risk, especially in parts of the network where flow velocities are low, leading to longer residence times. With the ultrasonic measuring system, FLUXUS WD, which has been specifically designed for the demands of the water industry, water suppliers can now monitor volume flow, velocity, and temperature with one device. The extremely robust transducers with protection degree IP68 are suitable for buried installations and need no shaft construction.

SIL certified clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters

As the technological leader in the field of non-invasive ultrasonic flow measurement with ultrasound, FLEXIM has continuously set new standards over the years. Their clamp-on FLUXUS ultrasonic measurement systems measure virtually anything that flows – liquids as well as gases. FLEXIM has been setting the pace of this development for the best part of 25 years. With their flow meters, they have not only demonstrated that non-invasive measuring technology works reliably and precisely but, at the same time, they have continuously strived to extend its range of applications.

FLEXIM are particularly proud of their pioneering work carried out to transfer the clamp-on ultrasonic technology to the non-invasive flow measurement of gases. Today, FLEXIM is the only supplier of clamp-on ultrasonic systems for non-invasive flow measurement of liquids and gases with SIL certification worldwide. Their products meet the highest requirements of industrial production, with the highest levels of safety for people and the environment on the one hand and the highest levels of plant availability on the other.
