A closer look at Solidworks’ five favourite tools for Engineers
In the advent of a recent SolidWorks Tips for Engineers screencast, PIF took a closer look at Product Marketing Specialist, Jeremy Regnerus' five favourite free tools for engineers.
5 favourite free tools for engineers
eDrawings tool for engineers
Collaborate more effectively with eDrawings software, the first email-enabled communication tool that dramatically eases sharing of product design information. Fast, reliable, and convenient, eDrawings files can supply representations of 3D models and 2D drawings created with the many CAD systems on the market.
eDrawings offers unique capabilities like point-and-click animations that make it easy for anyone with a PC to interpret and understand 2D and 3D design data.
In addition, eDrawings Viewer allows convenient viewing of supported AutoCAD DWG and DXF files and native SolidWorks parts, assemblies, and drawings. It's intended primarily for people who don't use CAD software and therefore don't need to publish eDrawings files themselves. Innovative built-in interpretation tools include 3D Pointer, Virtual Folding, Point-and-click Animation, and Hyperlinking.
Draft Sight CAD
DraftSight is a free, standalone, professional-grade 2D CAD product for professional CAD users, students and educators to create, edit, and view DWG files. The software runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and includes access to online community support, copious learning resources and an annual product upgrade.
There's also a DraftSight Professional add-on that provides user-driven enhancements to your free version. Or there's an enterprise specific suite of support and services, designed to help companies and educators to reduce software compliance issues and deployment challenges, as well as enhance customization and integration. Check out their handy Resource Centre.
Color Cop is a multi-purpose colour picker for web designers and programmers. It identifies and represents colours in various hex colour code formats. All you need to do is drag the eyedropper control to any location on the screen and release. The hex colour code for the selected colour will be automatically copied to the clipboard.
Other handy features include a magnifier; auto-copy to clipboard; multiple output options; colour options; relative position measuring; colour history; complementary colour palette; system tray support; BMP to clipboard; and other minor additions like an RGB float mode.
CustomPartNet's intuitive web 2.0 applications can jump-start the product design and costing process, whether you are just getting started or already working with a jobshop or enterprise product costing solution. Users are able to quickly create a new cost estimate or find a similar part from the public part gallery to use as a baseline estimate. Estimates can be saved, added to part galleries, and even shared with colleagues to collaborate on the estimation process.
CustomPartNet also provides educational content across a wide range of manufacturing processes to help both students and practising engineers that are new to the manufacturing industry. Process overviews, design guidelines, and an in-depth glossary allow users to explore how a process works and learn how to design more cost effective parts. Interactive tools include a process selector, material selector, and manufacturing widgets that perform quick calculations to common design and manufacturing problems.
