The importance of Instrument Calibration

Calibration is the checking or adjusting of the accuracy of a measuring device.  A comparison of measurements is made between a known, correct measurement which is set as the standard and another measurement which is known as the unit under test. All measuring devices should be calibrated periodically to ensure accuracy in readings.

Here are some things to bear in mind:

  • Hydrostatic pressure sensors need calibration when being started up.
  • The time span between calibration servicing is dependent on the required accuracy
  • Calibration can be conducted in a lab or on site
  • Laboratory calibrations give better accuracy and accredited calibration*
  • Maintenance planning – make sure instrument calibration is planned and controlled. If your operation has critical components, make sure you have spares at the ready.

*Accredited calibration; an accredited calibration is carried out under strict compliance with national & international guidelines. This compliance is regularly audited and supervised by an accreditation authority.
