Val-Matic Ener-G Ball Valves eliminates headloss, minimises pumping power, saves energy and reduces costs

Val-Matic Ener-G Ball Valves were installed in phase one of The Northern Water Supply Project (NWSP) in the East Cherry Creek Valley Water and Sanitation District (ECCV) located in Aurora, Colorado.

The NWSP was a $35 million project, which involved pumping water out of the South Platte River, more than 30 miles away. Phase one involved installing a 31-mile pipeline and two pump stations to carry the water 1000 feet in elevation to ECCV’s storage tanks.

Ener-G Ball valves in pumping application

Val-Matic Ener-G Ball Valves were successfully installed and they delivered considerable benefits to the project.  According to Clint Carter, the Water Treatment Lead Manager, the Ener-G Ball Valves provided tight sealing, long life and significant energy savings. These capabilities made them a strong contender for phase 2 of the project.

Phase 2 – Phase 2 of the project involved the construction of a Reverse Osmosis Treatment Plant

The advantages listed above were not the only reason why the Val-Matic Ener-G Ball Valves were considered ideal for the application. The most significant advantages for this application are the valve’s capability to provide optimal surge control in pumping applications.

Unlike typical check valves, the Ener-G Ball Valve uniformly changes the flow rate during travel – pressure conditions and line flow do not affect the speed of operation of the Ener-G Ball Valve.  The Ener-G Ball Valve has the inherent flow characteristic of equal percentage, which is the optimal flow characteristic for surge control.

The benefits of the Ener-G Ball valves:

•No Headloss

•Minimised pumping power

•Energy savings

•Reduced costs

Val-Matic Ener-G Ball Valves were successfully installed. The station houses 3 sets of pump control valves and two surge anticipation relief valves. Each set includes a vertical turbine pump and a 16” Val-Matic Ener-G AWWA rubber-lined Ball Valve with a variable speed actuator.

The completion of the NWSP provided the district with a long-term renewable water solution, whereas beforehand the district’s water supply came from non-renewable sources. The Val-Matic Ener-G Ball Valve contributes to the district’s innovative Water Treatment Plant by being a low maintenance valve that reduces energy costs and delivers surge free operation.
